Model UN Day at Seton Hall University

Heritage Middle School sent five delegations to the Model United Nations Day at Seton Hall University on Friday, February 5, 2010.  The students took part in Committee Meetings and a Plenary Session.  Topics discussed were Global Education, Climate Change, and Nuclear Disarmament.  Heritage students represented the countries of China in discussion of Global Education; Denmark, United Arab Emerites, and France on Climate Change; and Venezuela on Nuclear Disarmament.  By the close of the Plenary Session, Heritage students earned the award of "Best Delegation" for both Climate Change (Nitay Caspi, Rinat Alelov, and their  third delegation member) and Nuclear Disarmament (Jay Schaefer, Matt Reuter and Lexi Katz).  Some of the other students participating were Jennifer Su, Jeffrey Dong, Samin Gokcekus, Francesca Agnello and Jared Ebner.
To prepare for this event, students researched in depth the country they represented.
This intense research was necessary because the students had to assume the position of ther country in every aspect of dealing with the issues.  They then composed a position paper regarding their topic as seen through the eyes of their country. Finally, they created a resolution from the point of view of their country regarding their assigned topic.  This resolution was required to reflect the exact resolution wording policies of the United Nations.
Heritage Middle School is proud of the fine work these students have done.  Their committment to excellence was evident as they researched, wrote, presented in committee, and questioned in the Plenary Session.  It is hoped that they will pursue this type of challenging experience  as they go on to high school.
