Livingston High School is a comprehensive public high school which provides programs to meet the diverse needs of the 1,654 students enrolled in grades 9-12. The school calendar incorporates four marking periods; 40-minute class periods, five days a week; and 40 to 80 minute lab periods, one to two days a week.
 
All students pursue an appropriate academic program encouraging active involvement in learning. The academic program is augmented by a wide range of elective courses and an alternative high school program to help guarantee the success of our students.
 
Livingston High School consistently has been named as one of New Jersey’s “best” high schools in New Jersey Monthly Magazine. Newsweek magazine’s May 2007 rating of the country’s top high schools placed Livingston as the twentieth highest-ranked school in New Jersey. Approximately 97% of each graduating class attends post-secondary institutions.

Livingston High School offers an extensive array of course options which are intended to provide for a range of student interests, abilities and needs.
 
ART: The Art Department offers a variety of exciting courses ranging from Introductory to Advanced Placement levels. Students are given the opportunity to explore various media while learning about aesthetics, art history and master artists. AP Studio Art (by media) and AP Art History provide college level curricula, while TV Production, Sculpture, Metal Arts, Digital Imaging, Creative Photography, Ceramics, Painting, and Drawing provide hands-on art experiences.
 
BUSINESS: The Business Department offers courses ranging from Introduction to Business and Computer Applications to AP Economics and Microsoft Certified Applications Specialist - Honors. Accelerated Accounting and Accounting 2-Honors earn credit from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Students who participate in the Cooperative Education Program (15 credits) gain a paid internship experience at an off-campus site in a career they may be interested in studying at the post-secondary level.
 
COMPUTER STUDIES: Computer Studies are offered through the Art, Business, Mathematics, Music and Technology Departments. Full-year courses include Digital Imaging, Programming for Problem-Solving-Honors, Computer Applications, Computerized Accounting, Computer-Aided Design, Music Technology, Engineering Design, Microsoft Certified Applications Specialist – Honors and AP Computer Science.
 
ENGLISH: All students are required to take four years of English. World Film, Journalism, Creative Writing, Speech and Drama Workshop, Shakespeare-Honors and Forensics and Debate are a few of the electives offered. AP courses are available for English 3 and 4. An English Enrichment course is required for students who fall below the expected proficiency levels on standardized tests.
 
MATHEMATICS: All students are required to complete three years of mathematics. Along with the traditional mathematics curriculum, statistics courses and computer courses are offered for those students evidencing interest or aptitude in these areas. A Mathematics Enrichment course is required for students who fall below the expected proficiency levels on standardized tests.
 
MUSIC: Many of our students understand the value of music as a part of their educational experience and courses are offered to encourage knowledge acquisition and performance abilities. Courses in Band, Chorus and String Orchestra offer opportunities for students to perform and require a commitment beyond the normal school day. Music Theory, Music Technology and AP Music Theory are part of many musicians’ education as they learn to create music.
 
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH: The graduation requirement for all students is four years of PE/Health. Through participation in a comprehensive approach to fitness and health, students learn varied methods for the personal maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. Developmental and Adapted PE is available to students who are unable to participate in all or some aspects of a standard PE program.
 
SCIENCE: Three years of Science are required for graduation. The recommended sequence for most students in a college preparatory program is Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Many electives advance the traditional curriculum, including Bio-Nuclear Chemistry, Forensic Science, Physiology and Science Research. Science Research is a three-year sequence (grades 10 to 12) in which students have the opportunity to work with a mentor from the scientific community to perform authentic research.
 
SOCIAL STUDIES: Three years of Social Studies are required for graduation with a two year American History requirement. Many electives are available, including Sociology, The Vietnam Era, African American Studies, Women’s Studies, Middle Eastern Studies - Honors and AP Government and Politics.
 
TECHNOLOGY: The Technology Department offers courses in Technology Studies and Family Consumer Science, which include Auto Technology, Electronics, Electronics for AP Physics C, Computer-Aided Design and Engineering, Stage Craft and Wood Working, Sports Nutrition and Foods, Interior Decorating, Fashion Design and Family/Child Development. Technology and Design for Science and Engineering is a recommended co-requisite for Honors Physics. Career Internship Programs (CIP) provide opportunities for students to be involved in formal career exploration through workplace experience.
 
WORLD LANGUAGES: Today’s students have had exposure to at least one world language prior to high school. A minimum of one year of World Language is required for graduation, although the majority of LHS students complete two or more years of language study. Six-year sequences which culminate in the high school are available in Chinese, French, Spanish and Italian. Honors and/or AP programs are available in Spanish, French, Chinese and Italian. In Spanish, there is a two-year sequence of study designed to provide accommodations for those students who require a slower pace in the acquisition of a second language.

More than 75% of the professionals at Livingston High School hold Master’s Degrees and approximately 3% of the staff holds Doctorates. The Livingston High School District provides extensive staff development opportunities for all staff members. Faculty at Livingston High School believe in lifelong learning, which is modeled through their engagement in educational opportunities and in being granted numerous awards.
