May Update...ReadingThis month in Reading Workshop we are continuing to work on our Reading Book Clubs. Students are reading the same books within their clubs. They are learning how to have respectful discussions about their books. Some of the discussion topics include the characters, setting, problem, solution, connections to books and opinions about books. Students are using speaking and listening skills during this time, as well.WritingIn Writing Workshop, we are continuing to work in our Non Fiction Writing Unit. Students are writing about themselves, their partners, school, and objects. Students are including opening and closing sentences. Later this month, we will begin our Opinion Writing Unit. Students will write about their opinions and give reasons that support their opinions. As always, we are working on adding more details and using punctuation and capitalization throughout our pieces.MathIn math we are finishing our subtraction unit and will be working in our time and money unit. Students will practice telling time to the hour and half hour. Students will represent time by drawing the hour and minute hand, as well as writing the time in a digital way. In our Money Unit, students will practice identifying coins, counting coins, making exchanges and representing money using different coin combinations.
Science
In Science, we are exploring habitats and the animals and plant life that live there. We will be exploring the pond and wetland habitats and observing our tadpoles as the change and grow into frogs.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we will be continuing to study famous Americans. This month we will focus on American symbols such as our flag, the Statue of Liberty and the bald eagle. We also will be getting ready for our Famous American Show, in which we will share all that we learned throughout the year about Famous Americans.
