The decision to open or close schools in bad weather is a difficult decision and LPS is very sensitive to how these decisions affect you and your family. While students are better served by being in school - which empowers them to learn, create, contribute, and grow - our top priority is always their safety.
Livingston Public Schools uses an outside vendor to send e-alerts to parents concerning delayed openings, school closings, early dismissals and other emergencies. This vendor, like others providing the same service, is activated using the internet. Sometimes the vendor experiences technical glitches that significantly delay the delivery of our automated phone calls and e-mails. Livingston Public Schools knows that the possibility of such a glitch exists and would like to remind you that there are alternative ways this important information is disseminated.
LPS Website - By 5:30 a.m. the message is posted on www.livingston.org and each individual school’s website. If the decision is made the night before, the message will be posted by 10:00 p.m.
Media - The following media outlets are notified and broadcast the information on their news programs and/or websites: News 12 New Jersey, WABC-TV, Fox, WPIX, NBC and LivingstonPatch.com.

FAQs - The below questions and answers seek to provide you with some clarity with regard to keeping our schools open or closing them during inclement weather.
Q: How do we make our decision?
A: The decision to open or close schools during inclement weather takes several factors into consideration. Those factors are as follows:
- Information on road conditions from district and police personnel.
- The amount of snow and ice accumulated.
- Whether precipitation is continuing.
- Building conditions (for example whether we have electricity or heat).
- Parking lot conditions.
- Temperature and wind chill.
- Weather predictions.
- What other local school districts are doing.
- The Governor calling a State of Emergency.
Q: Who makes the decision?
A: The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for making the final decisions based upon the aforementioned factors and recommendations from key district personnel and local officials.
Q: When is the decision to delay/close schools made?
A: Information is gathered to make the decision prior to 6:00 a.m. so that we may communicate that decision to parents/guardians and teachers. An initial decision to delay may be made, followed by another decision to close school due to worsening weather. If school is not closed, but the weather worsens after students have arrived, a decision may be made to close the schools earlier. In the event of an early closing, the decision will be made before 11:00 a.m.
Q: What is the schedule in the event of a delayed opening or early dismissal due to inclement weather?
A: In the event of inclement weather and the need to delay the opening of school or dismiss students early, the following schedules will apply:

Early Closing Times
- Elementary Schools: 12:15 p.m.
- Mt. Pleasant Middle School: 12:45 p.m.
- Heritage Middle School: 12:45 p.m.
- Livingston High School: 12:00 noon
Q: Will programs/activities be canceled due to inclement weather?
A: If school is closed, all programs/activities will be suspended. If there is a delayed opening, the morning preschool P.R.I.D.E. program will be canceled and all activities that take place before school will be canceled. If there is an early dismissal, the afternoon preschool P.R.I.D.E program will be canceled and all after school activities will be canceled.
There are times when there is no perfect decision. If you do not feel as though it is safe for your child to attend school, please use your best judgment. The safety of our students – your children – is our number one priority and will be the number one factor when deciding whether to keep schools open or to close them during inclement weather.
