How to Find a "Just Right" Book

  • Finding a "just-right" book is important to help your child find a book that is at their reading level and makes reading more fun! The power of choice and letting your child choose their own books will foster the love of reading and make them feel empowered!

When at the library or the book store have your child use the "Five Finger Test" to help select a book.

1.Choose a book you think you will enjoy.

    2. Read the second page.

    3. Hold up a finger for each word you are not sure of, or do not know.

    4. If there are five or more words you don't know, you should choose an easier book.

Once you found a book that's good for you, read two more pages and ask yourself these questions:

Do I understand what I am reading?

Do I know almost every word?

Do I think the topic will interest me?

    * If you answered yes to these questions... you found a "just-right" book! Happy reading!
