April Units of Study
    Math - Fractions
    During this unit, we will learn that fractions are parts of a whole. We will learn to identify the parts of a fraction (numerator and denominator). We will learn how to identify proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. We will learn to write fractions to represent pictures and draw pictures to represent fractions. We will also learn to identify fractions on number line.
    Reading - Opinion and Persuasive Texts
    Throughout this unit, we will explore both fiction and nonfiction persausive texts. Students will practice identifying the opinions presented within these texts, as well as the purpose of the text. They will also practice applying the various skills introduced throughout our previous units, including utilizing text feaures, identifying main idea and details, making inferences, and identifying evidence to support our ideas. Students will then use the texts that they read during this unit, to help them for their own opinions on these topics.
    Writing - Opinion Essay

    In this unit, the students will apply what they learned throughout our Literary Essay unit about the essay structure and forming a claim supported with specific evidence. Throughout this unit, students will learn to write about their own opinions, support their opinions with specific evidence, target a specific audience, and consider opposing views. The students solidify their understanding of the "essay format" by using an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
    Social Studies: Early Explorers
    Students will begin this unit by identifying the seven reasons for exploration. Then, the students will be studying early explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier, Henry Hudson, and John Smith. We will be focusing on the importance of colonies for the countries involved in The Age of Exploration. We will then move into our study of the Pilgrims and the hardships they faced, as well as what "pushed and pulled" them to The New World. We will end this unit by examining The Westward Expansion.
