Why
are we doing this WebQuest?
You have seen and heard
news stories about young lives that have been destroyed by drugs and
alcohol. This past year, several
popular artists lost their lives due to drug and alcohol abuse. Closer to home, you may have friends or
know students who have become involved in drugs and drinking. You may have heard stories about kids
that have been arrested for using or selling drugs. These stories show just how
destructive alcohol and drugs are.
They can destroy young lives.
Our
goal is to teach you about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol and show
you how to deal with peer pressure so that you can live the life you want to
live drug and alcohol free. WeŐll
use this WebQuest to help.
It
is your responsibility to know the reasons why you should live a drug- and
alcohol-free lifestyle as well as learn ways to handle peer pressure when it
comes to smoking, using drugs, or drinking alcohol. This WebQuest
will provide you with information that will help you know why you should say no
to drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes and how to handle negative peer pressure.
To get started, click on the Task button above.
How
will you show what you have learned?
Your group will be researching one of
following topics: cigarettes, illegal drugs, over-the-counter and prescription
drugs, or alcohol. Additionally, each group will research information about
peer pressure.
As you do your research, you will need
to think of how you can present your information in a PowerPoint to make it
informative, interesting and appealing for other students.
Your goal is to create a PowerPoint
that promotes a drug
and alcohol-free lifestyle by providing:
1) Product background
information,
2) Information about the
productŐs physiological and psychological
effects
(include short term and long term effects, too),
3) Information about
the userŐs impact on others,
4) Information about
the productŐs potential for addiction,
5) Include a ÔDid You
KnowŐ section which describes historical or
current
events related information focused on the product.
6) Information on Peer
Pressure: how negative peer pressure may lead
to
product use/abuse & information on how Resistance Skills can be
used
to prevent abuse & promote healthy choices, and
7) A closing thought or
summary sentence.

Procedure button above to continue.
Where
do we begin? What resources do we use?
1. Use
the On-Line Resources link to find the topic that your group will be
researching. Below your topic you will find a list of websites to use for your
research. Use these websites as your primary resources for this project. You may also use any websites on that
page. You may also use the Teen Health and Wellness Database from the Library
Website.
DO
NOT RELY ON OPEN SEARCHES (GOOGLE/BING/YAHOO) FOR INFORMATION.
2. Review
the Task Sheet and Evaluation Rubric to understand the types of information you
must gather. Then, divide the work among group members.
3. Gather
your information on paper or on notecards.
Paraphrase the information. Keep information organized!
4. Conference
together to see what information you have gathered and research more to fill in
any gaps.
5. Once
you have gathered all of your information, you will design a PowerPoint
presentation that includes your information. Your PowerPoint must include all
of the elements identified on the Task Sheet and will be graded according to
the Evaluation Rubric.

What
else can I do with this information?
This WebQuest
was designed to teach you more about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. It offered reasons why and ideas on how
you can live a drug-free/alcohol-free life.
Now that you are an expert on what it
takes to be drug and alcohol-free, consider sharing your poster with your
family and friends. That is one way to help people understand the importance of
living a drug- and alcohol-free life.
You can make a difference in your
school and community by sharing
your knowledge of how to handle peer pressure and why it is important
to avoid drugs and alcohol. We know
sometimes itŐs tough, but we know you can make the right choices for a healthy
and drug-free life!
