Harrison Kindergarten would like to spotlight a very special project this month. After reading the story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, each kindergartener created their own Brown Bear book. Creating our own books helped us learn and explore about:
ü using shapes to draw
ü naming shapes/recognizing attributes (ex. triangles have 3 sides, 3 corners, not round)
ü comparing shapes – same and different
ü sorting by various attributes (ex. color, shape, size, corners, no corners)
ü identifying colors
ü sight words (I, see, you, we, a, color words)
ü knowing the difference between a word and a letter
ü using pictures as clues to words
ü using rhythm, when reading
ü knowing the difference between a question and an answer
ü talking about an author and an illustrator (what are their jobs?)
ü searching for words in your environment (all around you) ex. red word on crayon, cereal boxes, signs (ex. Toys R Us)
ü finding a pattern in a story (ex. I see a …)
ü being aware of punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point)
ü tracking text (ex. one to one correspondence, moving left to right; start at the top)
ü role playing – using puppets and props to act out the story
ü cutting and tracing
ü singing
ü sequencing and retelling a story
ü recalling in formation
The Kindergarten children loved working on this project. They learned and had fun in Reading Readiness, Language Readiness, Language Development, Math Readiness, and Fine Motor Skills.
They also learned that it is important to always do YOUR PERSONAL BEST!
