Livingston High School senior Ava Thomas was recently honored by the New Jersey School Boards Association-Essex County as part of its “Unsung Heroes Student Recognition Program.” The awards recognize students “who make outstanding contributions to their schools and communities, but who may be overlooked under traditional student recognition guidelines. Honorees may have overcome academic or personal challenges, modeled good citizenship, or shown a spirit or quiet strength that inspires others.”

Ava was unable to attend the Unsung Hero Awards Program which was held on March 13, 2025 at Orange Preparatory Academy in Orange, but she was recently recognized by LHS administrators and took some time for a photo!

The following is the write-up from the awards ceremony:

Ava is a dynamic and passionate leader who thrives in both service and the arts. A dedicated member of the LHS Theater Department, she plays a crucial role behind the scenes as Stage Manager on the Production Crew and actively contributes to the LHS Stage Crew, Lighting, and Sound Club. Beyond the stage, she is deeply involved in her school community, participating in the LHS Black Student Union, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, National Honor Society, the United Way Club and serves as co-president of International Thespian Society. Her commitment to service is remarkable—she has earned a varsity letter for her extensive volunteer work, focusing on supporting individuals with disabilities and those facing financial hardships. Inspired by her own health journey, Ava founded Ava’s Allies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collaborates with organizations like St. Jude’s, The Ronald McDonald House, and Lyme Warriors to support sick children and their families. Her dedication to service has earned her recognition as a Jr. Glasses Champion and as part of Nickelodeon’s Together for Good “Framing the Future” campaign for OneSight. For five years, she and her sister have donated Halloween costumes and capes to Jersey Cares, ensuring every child gets to experience the magic of the season. During the pandemic, she handcrafted and donated over 100 “earsavers” to first responders at the Essex County Office of Emergency Management. Most recently, Ava used her creative talents to host a charity auction featuring her own handmade crochet pieces, raising over $2,000 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in honor of a friend receiving care there. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Ava shines in the world of pageantry and modeling. She was crowned the 2021 National American Miss New Jersey Jr. Teen, earning both the Heart of Service and Top Model awards. With an extensive runway and print modeling portfolio, she continues to make an impact in the industry while staying true to her passion for service and advocacy. Ava’s drive, generosity, and talent make her an inspiring force in every endeavor she pursues.
