It's a Blast: Hands-On Volcano Science

Young volcanologists at Riker Hill got an up-close look at what a real volcanic eruption is like. Taking their model volcanoes outside, teacher Gail Kelly and instructional aide Matthew Brill helped the fifth graders mix vinegar and baking soda with boiling water to create a chemical reaction and an eruption of “hot lava.” Science lessons on the Changing Earth focused on the reasons why volcanoes form, and how the energy that builds up in a volcano’s magma chamber causes them to erupt.
