MC CHALLENGE
This year, Livingston High School had six teams of five students enter the M3 Math Modeling Competition, sponsored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). 794 teams from across the US and UK participated in the competition, working to harness their math, research, and teamwork skills to analyze temperature trends, predict power demand, and identify the populations most at risk. This year's real world program was to help governments and communities strategically allocate resources to effectively manage heat waves and avoid power outages. SIAM turned to participating students for insight, looking for answers to questions such as: How can we predict the indoor temperature of non-air-conditioned urban dwellings during a heat wave? How much demand should a power grid be prepared to handle during the summer months? Will this demand change over time? Can cities minimize the effects of a heat wave or a power grid failure?
Two teams, coached by Ms. Cheryl Coursen, made it into the top 30 with Honorable Mention and an award of $1000. Congratulations to Team 17622, comprised of Samay Malde, Riddhi Shah, Suraj Nistala, Mayank Tiku, and Aayan Shah, and Team 17595, comprised of Ethan Liu, Aarav George, Gavin Lo, Aahaan Rathi, and Roger Zhang for their exceptional efforts!
