Hello, Hillside Families!
I hope you enjoyed the weekend!
We had such a fun Read Across America Week with so many great activities and events. It's one of my favorite weeks of the year! Special thanks to all of our guest readers who joined us on Friday afternoon to wrap up the week in such a positive way. Guests included Superintendent Block, our two assistant superintendents, district supervisors and other central office staff, Board of Education members, Mayor Klein, Detective Mullaney and Mrs. Vaccaro from the Livingston Public Library. We are so grateful for their time!
In light of the exciting announcement made last week regarding "pivots" to our learning models, I ask that you please make note of the following:
- Students in grades K-2 who are signed up for in-person learning will attend five days per week on a partial day schedule starting on Monday, March 15.
- Students in grades 3-5 who are signed up for in-person learning will attend five days per week on a partial day schedule starting on Monday, April 5.
- There will be no changes to the current daily schedule at this time. Additionally, the day will begin and end at the same times.
- At the present time, we are able to maintain six feet of distance in every K-2 classroom with the current number of in-person students expected. Starting on April 5 with the return of students in grades 3-5, we will make every effort to keep students spaced apart in classrooms as much as possible, with the understanding that six feet will likely not be possible in most of these classrooms because we have more students in these grades attending school in person. The district has ordered plastic barriers for all students, which we expect to arrive by April 5.
- Families will still need to fill out the daily COVID tracking forms and temperatures will still be taken at arrival doors.
- Starting with each grade's transition to five days (March 15 for K-2 and April 5 for 3-5), student materials will be allowed to be kept at school. The only materials going home daily will be what is needed for afternoon sessions and homework. Computers will need to go back and forth between school and home daily.
- While we expect for in-school students' screen time to diminish while in school, computers will continue to be part of the school experience as a learning tool, as they have been for a long time now.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences have been rescheduled to the week of April 26. Teachers will conduct conferences during the afternoons each day that week. I will be in touch with families after Spring Break with information about scheduling conferences. We will use the online scheduler that we used in the fall.
- March 17 was scheduled as an asynchronous day for conferences. It is now a day of school for students and will be a Cohort A day for students in grades 3-5.
- As announced, we expect to transition to full days of school in May. Stay tuned for information regarding this change.
We have our monthly PTA meeting on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Please use the link in the calendar below to access the meeting.
On Wednesday of this week is the next installment of our PTA "Hillside Dines Out" Fundraiser, this time at Tony Boys. 10% of all sales that day will benefit Hillside School. If anyone needs a recommendation for a sandwich, "The Murph" is my personal favorite!
We have our next materials pickup day for remote only students scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. Families of remote only students should plan to pick up materials curbside at the pillar doors between these times. Thanks so much!

REMINDER MESSAGES:
1) Our Key Club friends at Livingston High School have asked us to support their Tree-Plenish initiative and goal of planting 160 trees to offset the amount of paper used by LHS. Information can be found on this flyer or at this site. The group is also looking for volunteers to plant these trees; you can sign up to purchase a tree and/or volunteer using the provided site. Thank you, in advance, for your support! And, Hillside School plans to purchase some trees to be planted on our property, too!
2) Note from the Hillside Yearbook Committee: We are looking for photos of your children learning virtually! Please send any photos to be included in this year's yearbook to HILLSIDECLASSOF2021@GMAIL.COM. Please include your children's and their teachers' names on the email. Thank you!
