• The goal of the Pillar Peer Project (formerly Horizon-Hillside Helping Hands) program is to foster a greater understanding of children with disabilities, while promoting community integration between Hillside and Pillar School students.  The Pillar School is a school for children with multiple disabilities, also located in Livingston.

On various occasions throughout the year, students from each school visit the other to interact with their peers in a variety of ways. Our students have really enjoyed touring Pillar School, learning about their daily activities, and even having the amazing opportunity to watch the Pillar students perform in their yearly school play.  They have also participated in disability sensitivity training utilizing adaptive technology in stations to experience disabilities in areas of vision, communication, sensory integration, and mobility.  This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity for everyone involved, promoting empathy and acceptance among each and every one of our fourth and fifth grade Hillside students.

The Hillside-Horizon Helping Hands program (now Pillar Peer Project) received a 2014 Promising Practices in Character Education Award from the Character Education Partnership.
