nurse The role of educator is a vital role for the certified school nurse. Formal classroom teaching is provided for grades 1-5 by the elementary school nurses, including units from the health curriculum that focus on the sensitive topics of HIV, AIDS, and puberty. Additional topics could include personal safety, dental health, personal hygiene, food allergies, conflict resolution, and the human body. Health lessons are provided for secondary level students during regularly scheduled classes.  Informal teaching takes place continuously on a one-to-one basis during the delivery of nursing care to both staff and students.  Parent education is provided through written materials, school-home correspondence, video presentations and discussions, and special programs.
