This Week In Kindergarten...9/4 - 9/6Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Riker Hill! It was a very exciting (short) week here in KINDERGARTEN! The children are learning new routines for navigating our classrooms. This week, we read many stories like The Kissing Hand and Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten. We talked about our feelings and how we got ready for kindergarten. We even made a class graph! We began to build our classroom and Kindergarten 'RAMily' communities by having our first K RAMily meeting on Friday. This is a time for all kindergarten students to come together to share, learn and celebrate! Be sure to ask your child to fill you in on each day's exciting events."You're off to great places, today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!" - Dr. Seuss9/9 - 9/15We had an amazing first (full) week of kindergarten! This Week In Kindergarten, the children discussed class rules. We read Cat and Dog At School and worked collaboratively to write a set of class rules that will keep us safe, happy and healthy at school. The children learned the difference between indoor voices, whisper voices, and 'no talking' voices. To help us remember how and when to use each voice, we will be using a traffic light. The children colored their own traffic light as a reminder. We also read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and learned to identify color words and the words 'I' and 'see'. We are all so exicted to revisit this special book again next week! Stay tuned!"I follow three rules: Do the right thing, do the best you can, and always show people you care."-Lou Holtz9/16 - 9/20This week in kindergarten was filled with new learning and fun! We reread Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? Each child completed their very own rewrite of the book! First, we learned that books sometimes have patterns that help us read the words. Then, we used a variety of shapes to help us draw each of the animals in the book. As a class, we discussed each of these shapes and identified their properties such as 'it has 4 corners' or 'it has 3 sides'. Lastly, we reviewed the color words from the book. We ended the week with our weekly K RAMily meeting. Together, we sang songs about making good choices and about colors.-"Today is a good day for a good day!"-Anonymous9/23 - 9/27It certainly was a September to remember! This week in K, we wrapped up the month with a lesson from Mrs. Kandel and Mr. Toomey. During our kindergarten RAMily meeting, we heard the story The Frog Principal. We also heard the story Hands Are Not For Hitting and discussed all of the wonderful things that our hands can do. Then, the children drew things that their hands can do."Choose being kind over being right and you'll be right every time." -Richard Carlson10/2 - 10/4We didn't let the shortened week stop us from accomplishing so many things! This week in kindergarten, we enjoyed a special 'Fire Safety' assembly presented by our very own Livingston Fire Department. The children met some of our real-life heroes and learned fire safety tips like how to check your smoke detectors every month and how to create an exit plan and meeting place. After a discussion, the children colored, cut and sorted 'safe' and 'unsafe' choices."In a world full of pop heroes, fantasy heroes, and sports heroes, we should never forget to look at the real heroes for real courage, real strength, and real stories."- Steve Nethercott
