I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and long weekend!  Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate and I wish you peace and light this holiday season!

The next installment of the PTA's Hillside Eats Out fundraiser is this Tuesday at the Philly Pretzel Factory.  If you're in the mood for pretzels on Tuesday, please consider supporting the PTA by shopping at the Livingston location.  Mention "Hillside School" and 10% of the proceeds goes to the PTA!

The November PTA Meeting is this Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.  The link for the meeting can be found in the calendar below.  Prior to the PTA meeting, we have a special virtual "Meet and Greet" with Hillside's SEPAC representatives, Mrs. Carla Glomb and Mrs. Megan Severino-Hill.  The purpose of this meeting is for invited families to meet our school's representatives and learn a bit about SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Committee).  An email was sent to invited families on Wednesday.  A reminder email will be sent tomorrow (Monday).

Hillside School is supporting the Livingston Rotary Club's collection of gently used sneakers.  The collection will take place through December 20 and a box will be available for collection near the pillar doors.  Please see this flyer for additional information.  Thank you!

The PTA is hosting a special Holiday Shoppe this week where students will have the opportunity to shop for their loved ones.  Information was recently sent home with students.  Please see this shopping schedule for your children's assigned date and time.

    Hello, Hillside Families!

We had a great time at Friday's Student Council Assembly!  Congratulations to our newest Huskies of the Month, and to Mrs. Levine's and Miss Russo's classes for being awarded Holly and Hank, respectively, for showing great character!  Special thanks to our Student Council executive board, representatives and advisors for their continued hard work and preparations.

We have our first Caring Communities meeting of the year this Wednesday.  For those who are unfamiliar, our Caring Communities program is a small group, cross-grade socialization experience where students meet once per month with other students and a group leader to collaborate and learn together, and have fun!  Lessons are typically character education-themed and help support our overall program.  This is the eighth year of the program and we have grown to a total of 40 groups this year, each with about 10 or 11 students.  For this first meeting, we will engage in ice breaker activities to get to know or reacquaint with one another.  Additional information about this program can be found here.  We are looking forward to it!

Also on Wednesday is our next Student Council School Spirit Day!  Students are encouraged to "dress like their teacher" or other staff members on Wednesday.  Thanks, in advance, for your support and we are excited to see the creativity!

This week, students will bring home information about the PTA's 50/50 Raffle.  Please note that each FAMILY will receive one ticket packet.  The packet will go home with the family's eldest child if you have more than one at Hillside.  Thank you and we look forward to a successful fundraiser!

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend with your children!

Saturday, November 13, was World Kindness Day.  Students were challenged on Friday with being EXTRA kind to their families yesterday, and I hope they were!  Hillside will observe the day on Monday with two readings by yours truly (one for K-2 and another for 3-5).  Students will continue their observance of WKD by doing their best to perform random acts of kindness throughout the week that will be listed on their classroom Kindness BINGO Posters.  Families can help by encouraging their children to complete as many acts as possible!

The Apex Leadership Team will continue with its remaining three lessons this week.  Our time with Apex will culminate on Thursday with our Fun Run, where classes will participate in the Fun Run with their buddy classes from another grade, who will cheer on their buddies as they run around and race to the finish line!  For now, the forecast looks pretty good for Thursday and we are very much looking forward to a "fun" run!  Many thanks to families and friends for their generosity, thus far, and we look forward to another great push this week.  The raised funds will be critical to supporting the PTA and important school activities and projects.

We have our next Student Council Assembly this Friday afternoon.  Our executive board, class representatives and advisors always work very hard to prepare for the assemblies, and we look forward to another successful assembly this Friday!  This year, we are making every SC Assembly day a school spirit day, so students are encouraged to wear their Hillside gear or school colors (blue and yellow) on Friday!

The PTA is hosting its annual coat drive from November 29 to December 10.  Please see this flyer for additional information.  Thank you, in advance, for any support you will be able to provide!

Regarding lunch ordering, lunch orders can no longer be placed for this week.  Lunch orders for the week of November 22 are due by Friday, November 19 at 3:00 p.m.  The November lunch menu can be found on the school's site or here.  Thank you!

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend with your children!

As you know, we have Picture Make-up/Re-take/Group Photo day tomorrow (Monday).  Families should refer to the email sent on Wednesday for information.  Thanks so much!

The Hillside PTA has partnered with the Apex Leadership Company for a third straight year to promote character and wellness, and raise needed funds for the PTA and school.  We kick off the experience with a Fun Run Pep Rally on Monday afternoon with this year's (fitting) theme, "AS ONE".  The Pep Rally will be followed by six days of lessons, which will culminate in the Fun Run scheduled for November 18.  This year, classes will participate in the Fun Run with their buddy classes from another grade, who will cheer on their buddies as they run around and race to the finish line!  We look forward to a fun-filled experience, and thank you, in advance, for your support.  Kindly find additional information in this flyer.  Information will also be sent after each lesson so that families can discuss with their children.  Thank you!

Our monthly PTA School Store will be held during recess this Wednesday.  After the resounding success of the first, the PTA purchased all new goods to sell and has secured additional volunteers to help make the experience for kids even better!

The next installment of the PTA's "Hillside Eats Out" fundraiser is this Thursday.  Tony Boys is the featured restaurant and 10% of the day's lunch and dinner sales will benefit the PTA.  If you like and eat chicken, I highly recommend "The Murph" sandwich--it's my favorite!   Please remember to mention the Hillside PTA if you are able to purchase food on this day!  Thanks so much!

Regarding lunch ordering, lunch orders can no longer be placed for this week.  Lunch orders for the week of November 15 are due by Friday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m.  The November lunch menu can be found on the school's site or here.  Thank you!

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

Happy Halloween!  I hope you enjoyed the day if you celebrate!

As a reminder, we have Parent-Teacher Conferences this week.  Students will have partial days of school and will dismiss at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, 11-1, Tuesday, 11-2, and Wednesday, 11-3.  Please note that we do not have scheduled lunch periods on these days and students will not have lunch in school.  Parents should send students to school with a healthy snack, as always.  Conferences will take place virtually and teachers should have already shared their Zoom links with you.  Please contact teachers directly if you have not received their links.  Thank you and I wish everyone positive and productive conferences!

We have our Summer Bridge Pizza Party on Tuesday for invited first and second graders who worked hard over the summer to complete the Summer Bridge packet they were provided in June.  Thanks to the families who worked with their children and we look forward to celebrating that work on Tuesday!

The Hillside PTA has partnered with the school this year to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our student body and families with special assemblies and/or activities.  The goal is to celebrate and appreciate everyone, and we began a couple of weeks back with the PTA-sponsored Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly, as you might recall.  We have continued our efforts this month by partnering with an amazing group of families who celebrate Diwali.  Students will learn about the five-day festival this week by watching a video created by our own families, painting diyas in art class, reading/listening to literature in library-media classes and in their general classes, and by coloring and creating their own Rangoli art, among other activities.  I thank the families who worked so hard to educate the school and me, and prepared all of these amazing activities.  Everyone should look for a Diwali-decorated pillar entrance on Tuesday!  Happy Diwali to all of our families who celebrate and may it bring you happiness, prosperity and joy!

Under the direction of the District Equity Leadership Team last year, Hillside and the other schools in Livingston created their own teams to discuss, explore and facilitate equitable practices in schools.  Hillside's Equity Leadership Team met three times last year with representatives from the Great Schools Partnership to have baseline discussions involving equity, to review data and examine how we can use our own existing character education program to support the work.  The team currently consists of 13 staff members and three parents, but is open to additional interested parents who may want to join.  We will typically meet after school and our first meeting of the year will take place after school on November 9.  Anyone interested should contact me directly.

Regarding lunch ordering, lunch orders for the week of November 8 are due by Wednesday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m.  The November lunch menu can be found on the school's site or here.  Thank you!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Reminders from prior messages:

    1)  Families are also reminded that you can now enter your children's absences into the Genesis Parent Portal (phone calls to the school are no longer required).  Information on how to do so can be found here.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Schools are closed on Thursday and Friday of this week.  I wish everyone a great week ahead and a wonderful long weekend with your children!

    Best regards,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you had a great weekend with your children!

The Livingston Public Schools will observe "Red Ribbon Week" this week with class lessons and daily dress up observances.  Parents should refer to the calendar below for daily dress up activities, starting with "Camo Day" tomorrow.  Thank you, in advance, for your support!

We have our October PTA meeting on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.  The Zoom link for the meeting can be found in the calendar below.  Please join us if you can!

Halloween festivities will take place Friday afternoon starting at 1:15 p.m. with the school-wide parade.  Information can be found in this letter sent home this past week.  While the forecast for Friday looks iffy at the moment, we will do our best to hold an outdoor parade.  Families should expect a call to be made that day by 11:00 a.m. either way; my apologies, in advance, for any inconvenience this may cause you.  Class parties will take place following the parade and will happen regardless of weather.  Should indoor parties be necessary due to weather, food will not be eaten in class and goodie bags will be sent home with students.  Fingers crossed for some decent parading weather!

Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place virtually the week of November 1st.  Students will have partial days of school and will dismiss at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, 11-1, Tuesday, 11-2, and Wednesday, 11-3.  Please note that we do not have scheduled lunch periods on these days and students will not have lunch in school.  Families must register for a conference time with teachers using this link by Wednesday.  Those who do not register will be assigned a date and time.  Teachers will share their Zoom links for conferences with families directly.  Thank you!

We understand that COVID-related procedures can be confusing, particularly those regarding required quarantines.  Nurse Lisa kindly created this guideline document for your reference.  Please let us know if you have any questions and we thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Regarding lunch ordering, please remember that lunch can no longer be ordered for this week.  Lunch orders for the week of November 8 are due by Wednesday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m.  The November lunch menu will be made available to families on the school's site shortly.  Thank you!

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope this message finds you enjoying the weekend!

We announced the winners of our annual Respect Poster Contest earlier this week.  We received so many wonderful posters and, while it was difficult to choose just a few, I am happy to announce the following winners by grade level:

    • Kindergarten:  Suzan S.
    • Grade 1:  Emma L.
    • Grade 2:  Camilla C. and Jayden J. (tie)
    • Grade 3:  Elena G. and Joshua H. (tie)
    • Grade 4:  Hunter L.
    • Grade 5:  Kyleen L. and Davin M. (tie)

Congratulations to our winners, whose posters are hung in the main hall for the school to see!

We also announced the winner of our Student Council Special Election that took place on Pep Rally Friday.  This Special Election was the result of our formerly-elected Student Council Vice-President moving away over the summer.  We had four amazing candidates put themselves forward for the position, but we congratulate Bradley T. on his victory and look forward to working with him on the Student Council Executive Board!

Our first PTA School Store sale in over a year and a half took place this past week and was a resounding success!  Thanks to the families who supported the store, which just about sold out of items!  We have our next store scheduled for November 10 and the PTA Committee responsible for the store has already ordered some new and exciting items.  More to come, but we thank you, again, for your support!

This week is School Violence Awareness Week across NJ schools.  Hillside will observe the week with classroom lessons about managing anger and dealing with conflict appropriately, and our fourth and fifth graders will have an assembly with the Livingston Police Department to discuss a variety of topics, including cyberbullying.

We wrap up our observance of Hispanic Heritage Month on Tuesday with a fun dance assembly with latin dance instructor, David Cross.  Thanks to the Hillside PTA for arranging this visit!  Students observed Hispanic Heritage Month with other activities across special areas, including library-media, art and world language classes.  A description of these activities can be found in this document

Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place the week of November 1st.  Students will have partial days of school and will dismiss at 12:00 p.m.  Information regarding conferences will be sent home this week.  The online scheduling link will be emailed to families on Saturday, October 23, at around 10:00 a.m.

Please see Nurse Lisa's October Newsletter for families here.

Regarding lunch ordering, please remember that lunch can no longer be ordered for this week.  Lunch orders for next week (week of October 25) are due by this Friday at 3:00 p.m.  The October lunch menu is available on the school's site. It can also be found here.  October dates have been added to the dropdown menu.  Thank you!

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the weekend!

We had a blast at Friday's Back to School Pep Rally!  We took the amazing school photo seen below, enjoyed six character pillar songs, met our Student Council representatives and had a Student Council Special Election for Vice-President (the one elected in June moved on us!).  We also introduced Buddy Class assignments this year, where classes of younger and older students are paired for special activities, acknowledged our Summer Readers and Summer Bridge students, and awarded mascots Hank and Holly to their first classes of the year (Havrilla and Lalli, respectively).  Special thanks to our Student Council advisors, Mrs. Havrilla, Mrs. Hinds and Mr. Grossman, for planning, coordinating and preparing the event, and to Hillside parent, Mr. Shyu, for taking the photo from the roof!  It was a fun-filled day and we thank you for your support of the event!

The Hillside PTA is hosting its first "School Store" of the year for students on Wednesday during recess.  We are happy to bring back the store after a long hiatus, which is popular among students, and thank the parent volunteers, in advance, for spending their time with us on Wednesday and helping our students shop!  We ask that families send in any shopping money in an envelope clearly marked as "School Store Money", particularly for our younger students, to help expedite shopping.  Thank you!

Our fourth and fifth graders take the state's Start Strong Fall Assessments this week.  This new assessment is designed to measure students' proficiency in the prior grade's standards and to inform our instruction, particularly after the last year and a half.  While we are confident in our own school and district assessments, and the learning that has taken place over that time, we look forward to receiving data that can provide us with additional information to assist our students.  We expect that parent reports will also be available and I will be in touch with fourth and fifth grade families regarding this when I receive more information.

Halloween is approaching and I plan to send families complete information soon.  But, for your planning purposes, please know that we expect to have an outdoor parade and parties, weather permitting, all starting at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, October 29.  Children will be permitted to wear costumes to school that day.  Class parents will plan parties in conjunction with classroom teachers and will be the only parents permitted to attend the parties.  All families are welcome for the parade.

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you have enjoyed the weekend with your awesome children!

Thanks so much to the families who attended Thursday evening's Back to School Night.  Teachers worked hard on their presentations, which you surely found informational.  If you ever have any questions about our classrooms or programs, please do not hesitate to ever reach out to our awesome teachers or me.  As promised, you can find links to the videos that were shared that evening during my General Session below.  Enjoy!

It's not too late to join the Hillside PTA!  Please see this flyer for information on just how to do that!  Your support is sincerely appreciated!

We have our next installment of the PTA's "Hillside Eats Out" fundraiser this Tuesday.  Calabria's will donate 20% of their daily proceeds to the Hillside PTA.  So, if you're hungry and looking for takeout on Tuesday, please consider supporting this fundraiser and don't forget to mention Hillside School!

The PTA's Hillside Apparel Sale ends on Wednesday.  Please see the flyer linked in the first reminder message below for ordering information.  Looking forward to seeing my students in that Hillside swag!

This week is the "Week of Respect" across NJ schools.  While Hillside engages in activities and discussions about respect regularly (it is one of our pillars of character!), we plan to observe the week with additional activities, including our annual Respect Poster Contest and an additional lesson about being an "upstander".  Students and teachers will also be rehearsing their songs, chants and/or dances for Friday's Back to School Pep Rally!  Please don't forget that, for Friday, we are asking students to wear color shirts that reflect their grade level's assigned pillar of character.  The pillar assignments and colors are as follows:

    • Kindergarten:  Trustworthiness (blue)
    • First Grade:  Respect (yellow)
    • Second Grade:  Responsibility (green)
    • Third Grade:  Fairness (orange)
    • Fourth Grade:  Caring (red)
    • Fifth Grade:  Citizenship (purple)

Thanks to families, in advance, for supporting our rally and we look forward to a fun, character-filled, school-spirited time!

Emergency Pesticide Use Notification from the School District's IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Coordinator, Mr. Perrette:  As is required by law when pesticides are used in schools, families must receive notice.  Kindly click on the link above for a notification of pesticide use.  We have had some issues with bees and the service was provided on Saturday to, hopefully, remediate the issue.  Service was provided on the exterior of the building along the roofline near room 113.  Thanks for your understanding!

Regarding lunch ordering, please remember that lunch can no longer be ordered for this week.  Lunch orders for next week (week of October 11) are due by this Friday at 3:00 p.m.  The October lunch menu is available on the school's site. Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you have enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend!

Friday evening's Outdoor Movie Night was awesome!  Thanks to the families and staff who attended, and special thanks to the Hillside PTA for coordinating and hosting the event.  The turnout was amazing as was the weather for this fun community event!

Our Back to School Night is scheduled for this Thursday, September 30.  The event will be held virtually, in much the same fashion as last school year.  The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with me, and will then be followed by teacher presentations.  Classroom, special education and ESL teachers will contact their respective families directly this week with Zoom link information.  The letter from me that was sent home on Friday can be found here.  Please note that the link for my general meeting and a link to a document with special area teachers' Zoom links are found in this letter.

We are super-excited about our annual Back to School Pep Rally scheduled for Friday, October 8th!  Grade levels have each been assigned one of our Six Pillars of Character, and are preparing songs, chants and/or dances about their assigned pillar to showcase at the rally!  On Friday, October 8, we are also asking students to wear color shirts that correspond with their assigned pillars.  The pillar assignments and colors are as follows:

    • Kindergarten:  Trustworthiness (blue)
    • First Grade:  Respect (yellow)
    • Second Grade:  Responsibility (green)
    • Third Grade:  Fairness (orange)
    • Fourth Grade:  Caring (red)
    • Fifth Grade:  Citizenship (purple)

Thanks to families, in advance, for supporting our rally and we look forward to a fun, school-spirited time!

Regarding lunch ordering, please remember that lunch can no longer be ordered for this week.  Lunch orders for next week (week of October 4) are due by this Friday at 3:00 p.m.  The October lunch menu will be made available shortly on the school's site. It can also be found here.  October dates have been added to the dropdown menu.  Thank you!

    3)  Please accept this reminder that morning arrival is between 7:35 and 7:50 a.m.  Students who arrive at school after 7:55 will be considered tardy.  We understand that the traffic around school can make it difficult to park, but appreciate your assistance in ensuring that students are in school by 7:50 so that they can start school days on time with their teachers and classmates.  Note that the parking lot is not intended for daily drop-off/pick-up and families must not pull into the lot for arrival or dismissal.  Thank you!
