    Fundraiser Update:

If you haven’t received your access code, please feel free to reach out to Justin Harris at justinh@apexfunrun.com and he’ll be more than happy to supply it.

Here is tonight’s challenge from the Apex Team:

The class with the highest amount of pledges will get to PIE THE APEX TEAM!!!

Note for remote only families:  There will be a pickup for Apex T-shirts and badges next Monday, 10-26, from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m.  Please look for members of the PTA at the pillar doors.  This is curbside, so there’s no need to park and get out of your cars.

We look forward to next week’s Fun Run events.  This year, we will have two in-person events that are scheduled as follows:

    • Wednesday, October 28th:
      • Kindergarten at 1:30
      • First Grade at 2:00
      • Second Grade at 2:30
    • Thursday, October 29th:
      • Third Grade at 1:30
      • Fourth Grade at 2:00
      • Fifth Grade at 2:30

Students and adults who attend the Fun Run events are required to wear masks (during the run, too).  These events are weather permitting, and we will revisit the plans next week if alterations are needed.  Attendance is optional, but we hope that you can join us!

On each school day between tomorrow and the Fun Run events, there will be brief lessons taught by the Apex Leadership Team.  The team will teach virtually from the building.  They will be screened daily and will not have direct contact with students, but will be around during outdoor snack to say hello and encourage students from a distance.

Please see here for the Apex Fun Run flyer that was sent home in my message from yesterday.

Thank you for your support of this year’s Fun Run and we hope the kids are excited!

    Best,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend with your wonderful children!

Picture Day(s) this year will take place this week on Tuesday, October 20th, for cohort A students, and Wednesday, October 21st, for cohort B students.  Remote only students will be able to have their photos taken on the afternoons of these days (grades K-2 on Oct. 20 and grades 3-5 on Oct. 21; 1:30 to 3:00 both days).  Remote only families should plan to meet a staff member at the main entrance anytime between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. (door 1 adjacent to the staff lot), who will escort children to the gym and then to door number 2 for exit (back of the gym).  Parents will not be permitted into the building.  Your understanding is appreciated!  Masks must be worn by students.  Please see the Picture Day flyer for additional information.

Important note for remote only families:  All students typically get their photos taken on Picture Day, whether families purchase or not.  These photos are used for the yearbook.  Remote only families who choose not to have their children's photos taken in school may send a photo of their children (shoulders and up) against a white background to my secretary, Gina Ioviero, at gioviero@livingston.org.  Thank you for your cooperation!

The Hillside PTA has, once again, partnered with the Apex Leadership Company to host the "Fun Run" fundraising event.  Our two week experience begins tomorrow with a Fun Run Pep Rally, is followed by six days of lessons and culminates with two Fun Run events.  Please see this Fun Run flyer for additional information.  Thank you for your anticipated participation and support!

The PTA has partnered with Brainiax to provide after school enrichment for our students.  Please see this flyer for information.

REMINDER:  (Additional Halloween information coming soon!)

We plan on celebrating Halloween at Hillside School with virtual class parties and two in-person parades.  Complete information is forthcoming, but families can expect for there to be two separate parades that day, weather permitting.  Parade times will be 12:00 p.m. for students assigned to cohort B (hybrid and remote) and 2:00 p.m. for students assigned to cohort A (hybrid and remote).  Please note that remote students have been assigned to a cohort in the event of a switch to the hybrid model.  This cohort assignment can be found in the Genesis Parent Portal.  Thank you and we look forward to a safe and happy Halloween!

In staff news, we recently had two members of our faculty get married!  Last weekend, world language teacher, Miss Sofia Fernandez, got married and returned to school as Senora Haskell.  Just yesterday, fourth grade teacher, Miss Trebbe, got married and is now Mrs. Havrilla.  Congratulations and best wishes to both Senora Haskell and Mrs. Havrilla!

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the week of November 2nd.  I plan to send information next week, but parents can plan on 15-minute virtual conferences that will take place on the afternoons of November 2 and 4.  November 3, which is an all remote day for students and staff, will be an all asynchronous day for students, meaning there will be no live lessons that day.  Teachers will meet with students for a morning meeting to explain the day's assignments.  They will spend the rest of the day meeting with parents for scheduled conferences.  We will use the online conference scheduler, again, this year.  Look for that information soon!  Thank you for your understanding!

Safety continues to be of utmost importance and your help is needed!  We urge all adults to wear masks at all times when on school property.  This includes during morning drop off and after school pick up.  If adults other than parents drop off and/or pick up your children, please pass this message along to them.  We thank you for your understanding and anticipated compliance!

Thank you and have a great week ahead!

    Warm regards,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

We had fun at our Back to School Pep Rally on Friday!  The Pep Rally is one of my favorite events of the year and we made the most of our virtual event!  Highlights of the rally include:

    • Grades 3-5 Student Council Class Representatives were announced
    • Buddy class partnerships were announced
    • Summer Readers and Summer Bridge students were celebrated
    • Hank and Holly were awarded to their first classes of the year:  Hank to Mrs. Castoro's/Mr. Rahner's fifth grade class and Holly to Miss Lalli's Kindergarten class!
    • Grade levels did their dances to the tune of "I Love Rock and Roll" ("We Love Hillside School"), arranged/sung by second grade teacher, Miss DePalo (thank you, Miss DePalo!)

Special thanks to our Student Council Advisors, Miss Trebbe and Mr. Grossman, and our Student Council Executive Board, Sophie, Tae and Gianna, for coordinating and planning the event!

Our annual Respect Poster Contest deadline has been extended to this Wednesday.  Poster winners will be announced on Friday.  Thanks to all who have completed and submitted posters, and for making the task of picking one from each grade level so difficult!  (They're all so great!)

    REMINDER:

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you were able to enjoy the great fall weather this weekend with your children!

We look forward to another week of firsts ahead as we welcome back to school our grades 3-5 hybrid students in cohort A on Monday and in cohort B on Wednesday!  Families are encouraged to review the Hybrid Guide for Families that was sent last week, but are reminded of the following:

    • The COVID Screening Form will be emailed to all families each morning.  This form MUST be completed daily for students who are attending in-person school on their assigned cohort days.  Upon completion of the form, families will see a green check (unless the system directs you to stay home based upon your responses) that can be shown at the door to expedite entry.  This is not mandatory as we will have access to daily responses available, but it is helpful.
    • Doors open at 8:00 a.m. and all students should be in school by 8:15 to not be considered tardy.  Students will not be able to enter the building before 8:00 a.m.
    • Dismissal is at 12:40 p.m. at the doors indicated in the guide.
    • Students should bring in a snack, a towel to sit on for outdoor snack time and water.
    • Students must bring Chromebooks and chargers, and other supplies as already indicated by teachers in their communication.
    • A backup mask for students is also strongly recommended.

Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to another phase of our hybrid plan!

The next "Materials Pickup Day" is scheduled for this Thursday, October 8.  This pickup day is for students who are remote only, as hybrid students will receive any needed materials on their assigned days in school.  Pickup will take place after school hours from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at the front loop near the pillars.  It will be curbside, so families do not need to get out of their cars--just look for the setup outside.  We kindly ask that, if possible, grades K-2 families come between 3:15 and 4:15 and grades 3-5 families come between 4:15 and 5:15.  We hope this will alleviate congestion and a backup.  Thanks so much!

This week is the "Week of Respect" across NJ schools.  We will observe the week with our annual "Respect Poster Contest" and other class activities.  The week will conclude with our seventh annual Back to School Pep Rally scheduled for Friday, October 9.  The event will occur virtually this year from 2:10 to 3:10 p.m.  Students will be asked to wear shirts that represent their assigned pillars of character, as follows:

    • Kindergarten – Trustworthiness (Blue)
    • 1st Grade – Respect (Yellow)
    • 2nd grade – Responsibility (Green)
    • 3rd Grade – Fairness (Orange)
    • 4th Grade – Caring (Red)
    • 5th Grade – Citizenship (Purple)

Thank you, in advance, for your support of our annual rally and for helping your children show their character and school spirit!

Picture Day(s) this year will take place on Tuesday, October 20th for cohort A students, and Wednesday, October 21st for cohort B students.  Remote only students will be able to have their photos taken on the afternoons of these days (grades K-2 on Oct. 20 and grades 3-5 on Oct. 21; 1:30 to 3:00 both days).  Please see the Picture Day flyer for additional information.  We will work with Lifetouch to provide a safe photo-taking experience for our students.  Please note that all payments must be made online, as per the information on the flyer.

Please see the October Newsletter from Nurse Lisa for some updates from the school's health office.

Thank you and have a great week ahead!

    Warm regards,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you've enjoyed the weekend with your children!

Thanks to the families and staff who joined the PTA and me for Friday night's Kahoot! Trivia and Movie Night!  While nothing can ever replace our beloved in-person activities, I am thankful to the PTA for its efforts in continuing our Hillside School traditions.  And, I was quite impressed with the movie's video quality via Zoom!  The movie was great!  Thanks to the PTA and parent member, Mrs. Heilpern, for leading the trivia game and hosting the movie!

We are excited to welcome back our grades 3-5 students who are in the hybrid model next Monday, October 5th!  It'll be so nice to have children on both floors of our school building!  Families should review this Hybrid Guide prior to their first assigned hybrid day for important information.  Families have already selected their program preference (remote v. hybrid) and students have already been cohorted into either group A or B.  Families are encouraged to review their preferences and cohort assignments in the Genesis Parent Portal as soon as possible.  Please note that the beginning of the hybrid model will necessitate schedule changes for all classes in grades 3-5.  Teachers will communicate with families about these changes later this week.

We are so very grateful for the support of our families while students are learning remotely.  Your assistance has been integral to our daily success.  In an effort to honor the importance of instructional time between teacher and student, I respectfully request that adults at home do not interrupt teacher lessons to ask questions.  Any communication between parents and teachers must continue to occur outside of instructional time.  Parents should contact teachers to make mutually agreeable arrangements to discuss concerns or questions.  Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.

The next "Materials Pickup Day" is scheduled tentatively for Thursday, October 8.  This pickup day is for students who are remote only, as hybrid students will receive any needed materials on their assigned days in school.  Additional information is forthcoming, but families should plan to visit school during afternoon hours.

We have our seventh annual Back to School Pep Rally scheduled for Friday, October 9.  The event will occur virtually this year from 2:10 to 3:10 p.m.  Students will be asked to wear shirts that represent their assigned pillars of character, as follows:

    • Kindergarten – Trustworthiness (Blue)
    • 1st Grade – Respect (Yellow)
    • 2nd grade – Responsibility (Green)
    • 3rd Grade – Fairness (Orange)
    • 4th Grade – Caring (Red)
    • 5th Grade – Citizenship (Purple)

Thank you, in advance, for your support of our annual rally and for helping your children show their character and school spirit!

Thank you for reading and I wish everyone a wonderful week!

    Warm regards,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend with your children and happy holidays to those who celebrated Rosh Hashanah!

Tomorrow is a very special day.  In fact, we have two special days this week!  For the first time since March 13, we will welcome K-2 students whose families have selected the hybrid model and the Hillside staff could not be more thrilled!   We look forward to welcoming children back to school and to continuing to provide all students with the best educational experience possible--hybrid or remote!

We are excited about celebrating students who completed our Summer Reading (grades 1-5) and Summer Bridge (grades 1 & 2) activities at our upcoming annual Back to School Pep Rally on October 9th.  I know some families have already turned in reading logs and bridge packets to their teachers (we thank you for that!).  Information regarding how to turn in the logs and/or packets can be found here.  Please note that they are due by this Friday, September 25th.

We have our Back to School Night scheduled for this Thursday evening starting at 6:00 p.m. with my general session.  Teachers will then present according to a set presentation schedule thereafter.  Please look for complete Back to School Night information in a separate message from me to be sent tomorrow (Monday).

We look forward to Friday evening's PTA Kahoot! Trivia and Movie Night starting at 7:00 p.m.  Please see the link in the calendar below for the flyer.  It's free, so please try to join us!  And, you can help support the Hillside PTA by ordering lunch or dinner from Pizzetta that day!  Thanks, in advance, for your support and we look forward to seeing many students and families Friday evening!

Thanks so much and enjoy the week ahead!

    Hello, K-2 Families!

We are excited to welcome those students who will begin the hybrid model next week!  It will surely be one of the best days we've had at Hillside since March!

Please see attached for the Hillside Hybrid Family Guide.  It is my hope that this guide will provide you with information to get us started successfully.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your children's teachers or the main office at 973-535-8000, ext. 8150.

Thank you and we can't wait to see our students next week!

    Best regards,

    Mr. Gramata

    Hello, Hillside Families!

Our first week of school is behind us and we hope it was a good one for your children!  It was wonderful seeing students and families at the Meet & Greets!  Although the start of this year has been unlike any other, it remains our goal, first and foremost, to develop classroom community and positive relationships with students and families.  I would like to thank the faculty and staff for all of their hard work and efforts to that end, and the families for their support of their children and teachers.  If there's anything we can do for you, please do let us know!

Regarding the materials that our students received in their bags, I would recommend organizing these materials by subject area at your children's workspaces, so that they are handy for when they are needed.  Technical assistance for Chromebook and technology-related issues can be requested from the Help Desk using this form.  I would recommend bookmarking this form for future use, just in case. It can also be found on the district's website.

We have our first PTA meeting of the school year on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.  The link for this meeting can be found in the calendar below.  Please note that all PTA meetings will be held virtually until further notice.  Please refer to the email that was sent yesterday from the PTA for membership information and I encourage all families to join this wonderful group that does so much to support our students and school.

Back to School Night is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, September 24th.  The event will be held virtually and will begin with my general address followed by half-hour teacher sessions (times TBD).  Additional information is forthcoming.

We are excited to welcome back our K-2 hybrid students to school on Monday, September 21st!  Reminders and other pertinent information will be sent to K-2 families later this week.  At this point in time, all families should have made a selection of either "all remote" or "hybrid" in the Genesis portal.  Any changes from this point on must be made by office staff.  As per district communication, families who have selected "all remote" will have the ability to switch to hybrid, if interested, starting on November 1st.  Families whose children start the hybrid model can switch to remote at any time, but we do ask that you provide us with notification one day in advance.  Please note that the start of the hybrid model will minimally affect the schedule already in place for K-2 students.  The only difference is that we will end the morning for all students ten minutes earlier at 12:35 p.m. to provide ample time for safe student dismissal.

Thanks so much and enjoy the week ahead!

    Warm regards,

    Mr. Gramata

  • Meet & Greets/Supply Pickups

Posted by Carlos Gramata on 9/8/2020
    Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope that your children had a wonderful first day of school!  I know teachers worked hard to create community-building activities, and these will continue through the rest of the week and throughout the year.  The impact of a positive classroom environment on student achievement is immeasurable and we are committed to getting it right!

Please accept this friendly reminder that we have our Meet & Greets/Supply Pickups scheduled for this week as follows:
    • Grades K & 3, September 9 at 1:30 p.m.
    • Grades 1 & 4, September 10 at 1:30 p.m.
    • Grades 2 & 5, September 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Note:  On the assigned days, virtual instruction will end at 12:10 p.m. to allow for teachers to prepare for the afternoon.

We will set up outside on the upper blacktop (to the right and down the stairs from the loop).  Each teacher will have an assigned table.  At this table, students and families will be able to meet their teachers and pick up any materials for the first month of school.  Devices will also be distributed to children in grades 1 & 2, and to all students who are new to Hillside School.  At this time, Kindergarten students will only receive a device on a case-by-case basis; if one is needed, please reach out to classroom teachers.

All adults and children must wear masks and practice proper social distancing when on school property.  Parents are reminded that you must park cars off site on side streets, as our parking lot is for staff only.

At this point, the weather for Thursday's Meet & Greet looks a bit tentative.  If needed, I will be in touch with alternate plans for this event.  It will NOT be rescheduled.

Families who cannot make their scheduled Meet and Greet sessions should contact their teachers to let them know.  We will make alternate arrangements accordingly.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we begin this new school year.  We look forward to your continued partnership as we work to have an amazing school year!

    Best regards,
    Mr. Gramata
