The Homecoming Livingston 5-K Run Has Something for Everyone
September 28, 2010, Livingston, NJ – On Sunday, October 17 at 8:00 a.m. registration tables will be manned and ready for the Inaugural Livingston 5-K Run, a fun and fund-raising intergenerational event that is part of the Livingston Homecoming Weekend. Hosted by the Big ‘L’, the Livingston Education Foundation (LEF) and the West Essex YMCA activities have been planned to interest all members of the community from Pre-K children to Senior Citizens. Proceeds will benefit the Livingston Public Schools and the youth of Livingston.
Rain or shine, the 5-K Run will be held at Livingston High School on Robert Harp Drive. Kids’ activities will take place on the LHS turf field. (Should it rain, these events will be moved to the high school Auxiliary Gym.) The YMCA will provide for Pre-K children. Fun and Fitness activities for students grades K-5 will be run by Livingston Public Schools Physical Education teachers from 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. This will be followed immediately with more fun for kids and adults with a DJ who will host music, dancing, prizes and give-aways. All Pre-K and elementary aged children who participate in the fitness activities will receive a medal at the 11:15 a.m. awards portion of the program. Middle and high school students are encouraged to join the event by participating in either the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk or the 5-K Run. The 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk which will start at 9:45 a.m. is open to all. Warm-up exercises for senior citizens who wish to participate in this event will be run by the YMCA. The 5-K Run which is US Track and Field Certified and awards 500 Grand Prix points to runners will begin at 10:15 a.m. All runners will receive a 5-K Run tee shirt. In addition to the prizes and awards following the run, there will be a Health Fair that will provide wellness education information, displays, fitness trials and screenings. Applications for all aspects of this event can be found on the LEF Website at www.livingston.org/lef under Events - 5-K Run.
As with all of the Homecoming Weekend events, the 5-K Run is possible through the cooperation of many school and community organizations, the town council, businesses and interested individuals. Heidi Cislo, LEF President noted that, “Preparation has required a coordination of efforts by the three host organizations and their supporters. Working together has generated an appreciation and understanding of the various individual goals set by each group and reinforces how we can work together as a broader community to give our children a well-rounded education and awareness of being part of something larger than themselves.” She continued, "The vision and passion of so many people to make the Township of Livingston and our schools the best that they can be has come through in even the smallest details in the planning of the 5-K Run and all of the weekend events.”
The Livingston Education Association (LEA) is proud to support the efforts of the LEF for all Hall of Fame Homecoming Weekend events. Teachers, staff, and administrators will volunteer their time and expertise to be a part of the LHS visit by Hall of Fame inductees: Harlan Coben, class of 1980, Jennifer Goodman Linn, class of 1989 and Major General Glenn Rieth, class of 1976 as well as at the Homecoming Football Game on Friday, October 15, 7:00 p.m. on the LHS turf field, at an LEF Bookfair at the Barnes and Noble in the Livingston Mall to be held on Saturday, October 16 -17, at the Hall of Fame Dinner to be held at the Cedar Hill Country Club on Saturday, October 16 - 7:00 p.m., at the Student Homecoming Dance on the same evening, and of course, for the Sunday, October 17 5-K Run.
“The Homecoming Weekend is an opportunity to reacquaint our alumni with their roots here in Livingston. I look forward as a parent and member of the Livingston Board of Education to be volunteering to work side-by-side not only with adult members of our community, but with students who will be involved in the Homecoming Weekend events either as members of a school activity or service club, members of our school athletic or music programs, as volunteers or as participants. We hope that everyone will make an effort to be a part of one or several of the weekend events to show their support for education,” says, Leslie Winograd,
