Accompanied by business education teacher Alex Lamon, Livingston High School seniors Oishik Mukherjee and Joshua Metters recently testified before the Senate Education Committee in support of NJ S3497, a groundbreaking financial literacy bill.

This proposed legislation would require all high school students in New Jersey to take a personal finance course, ensuring they have the essential skills to manage their financial futures. Currently, a loophole in state law allows some schools to substitute personal finance with other courses, such as economics. This bill seeks to close that gap and provide consistent financial education across all schools.

Both students delivered compelling testimonies, sharing their insights and passion for the importance of financial literacy. Mr. Lamon also had the opportunity to speak. He emphasizing how this bill would close the gap of equitable personal finance instruction, so all New Jersey students received the type of focused financial literacy instruction that Livingston High School provides.

The Senate Education Committee unanimously approved the bill, and it will now move on to the Senate Budget Committee next month.

“I am so proud of my students who not only take charge of their own learning, but are advocating for students with me at the statewide level,” said Mr. Lamon.
