About Dr. Block

Dr. Matthew Block has served the Livingston Community as Superintendent of Schools since July 1, 2019. Dr. Block has over twenty years of experience in education. He began his career as a social studies teacher and subsequently served in the roles of assistant principal and principal. Most recently, Dr. Block worked as a district Director of Human Resources with the Summit Public Schools where he managed new teacher recruitment, hiring, onboarding, professional development, mentoring, employee relations, and staff evaluation. Throughout his career as an educator, Dr. Block has focused on leveraging student-centered instruction to optimally engage students in the learning process.
Born and raised in West Orange, Dr. Block earned a bachelor’s degree in history and communications from The American University in Washington, DC. He received two masters degrees from Montclair State University; one in teaching and the other in education administration. Dr. Block completed his doctor of education degree from Caldwell University where his studies focused on new teacher mentoring and induction. His research in this area earned him an award for Outstanding Dissertation from the University. Dr. Block is also proud to have received the Nora Radest Award for Educational Excellence from the Summit Educational Foundation for his work in establishing 21st Century collaborative and technology-infused learning environments and for his efforts to promote inquiry-based instruction at the middle school level. Dr. Block is also a member of the Board of Managers for Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, a branch of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges.
