Throughout the school year, staff and students at Harrison School collect aluminum pop tabs. This year over 42,000 tabs were collected! This week, 5th Grade Student Council members, along with advisors Miss Sorrentino and Mrs. Giannopoulos, delivered the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Long Branch, NJ, which opened in 1987. From there, the tabs will be brought to the local recycling center where they are weighed. The House receives cash based on the poundage. All money earned through this recycling effort goes directly to the funds needed to upkeep the house. A Ronald McDonald House (like the one in Long Branch that has eight rooms for family members) offers a safe, comfortable, and supportive refuge for families of children who are receiving medical services nearby. There are 357 houses around the world. The most recent opened in China in 2015 and has 104 rooms. Harrison has been supporting Ronald McDonald houses since beginning the pop tab collection during the 2011-2012 school year. Including this year's delivery, Harrison has donated approximately 294,000 tabs!
