It is with great pleasure that our school community announces Harrison's Teacher of the Year -- Deborah Craig! Miss Craig, who taught 1st, 4th, and 5th grades at two schools prior to coming to Livingston, has been at Harrison for 17 years. She teaches 5th grade ELA, Science and Social Studies. To gain a sense of why she was selected, read the comments below. They are just a few of the enthusiastic responses given by colleagues when asked to describe this outstanding educator:
"Deb will drop everything she is doing to help you out!"
“She is flexible and easy to work with – always accommodating, inclusive, and positive."
“She will think of something that needs to get done, and do it, before anyone else even realizes the need in the first place.”
“Deb is an awesome person to work with. She is always willing to share her thoughts/ideas/activities. Additionally, she is always willing to try something new to enhance her lessons and classroom environment!“
Still want to know more? Here she is in her own words:
Making the choice to be a teacher
"I love the opportunity to work with children and hopefully make a difference in their lives. I’m fortunate that I have a job that I actually enjoy coming to each day. Even though I’ve taught 5th grade for a long time, I feel like every year is an adventure because I get to work with new students and try out new materials that help to keep the subjects I teach interesting and hopefully make learning fun for my students, too!"
Her favorite teacher
"My favorite teacher was my first grade teacher, Sister Alice. She was the one who actually made me want to be a teacher. In all of my years of school, I look back and remember her as the teacher who made learning the most fun. She had high expectations for her students, but would work with us until we felt like we were successful. Although she could be strict when she needed to be, she was also a warm and caring teacher who made every one of her students feel that they mattered and were special."
Why Harrison is a great place to work
"I love the fact that Harrison School is such a welcoming place. I get to work with the most amazing colleagues, parents and students at Harrison School. Everyone here shows that they care about one another and are always willing to help each other. I’m lucky to work with a team of teachers who are willing to share ideas and work collaboratively together to make the job of teaching so much easier. I’m also lucky to have developed some great friendships with the people I work with each day."
Favorite places
"My favorite place to be is at the beach. I’ve enjoyed trips I’ve taken to places like Tybee Island, Georgia, Bermuda, Florida, South Carolina, and various places on the Jersey Shore, where I get to see beautiful views of the ocean. Each summer my family goes to Wildwood and that is something I look forward to every year. When I’m there, I enjoy spending time with my family, and I love taking walks on the beach and bike rides on the boardwalk. "
While Miss Craig’s favorite place may be the beach, our favorite place to see her is here at Harrison, where she continues to make a positive difference -- for students and staff -- every day. Congratulations, Teacher of the Year!
