Assignment Topic: Designing a Phone App

Rationale: There is no denying that smartphones have unlimited potential to help us manage our lives. We want you to join the wave in finding out what health and fitness applications are out there and available to help people achieve their health and wellness goals. We thought this project would be fun and that maybe - just maybe - an LHS student just might be the next successful app designer. 

Objectives:

• Student will be able to research and identify information to thoughtfully choose a health/wellness topic as the basis of development of a phone application.
• Student will be able to utilize the latest trends and information to design their app according to a target audience.
• Student will be able to utilize feedback from family, friends, and peers in order to adjust and improve their app.

Standards:

• 2.2.12.LF.7: Analyze the current and future impact of globalization and technology on the influences of participation in sports, games, physical fitness activities, dance, gaming, outdoor adventure, viewing sports, and social and emotional connections. 
• 2.2.12.LF.8: Identify personal and community resources to explore career options related to physical activity and health.

Directions:

Part 1

Select a health and wellness OR physical fitness/activity topic that can benefit from the development of a phone application (app). Research other phone apps and identify key aspects to successful apps, then research the topic you have selected so you can devise a unique and useful approach to managing or providing information on the condition/task. 

Part 2

Design your app using one of the following methods: 

• On paper, using an 8x11 paper as the screen page for each page
• Canva (www.canva.com - log in using your school email) 
• Google Slides

Part 3

Write a one-page essay describing why you chose the topic and what the need is that your app satisfies. Identify the target audience for whom the app is intended, and explain why they need this service. How will this app improve their current level of condition or provide other benefits?Part 4Share the design with a friend, parent or teacher to get their feedback. Is the app realistic? Does it meet a need? Do they think that they would use the app? Include this information and your rationale with the above assignment as a section called “reviews” - reviews can be in bulleted format. Be sure to provide a list of resources that were used for this assignment.

Grading: Your assignment will be evaluated on the following:

• Completion of all assignment requirements
• Use of accurate and up-to-date information to develop your phone application.
• Creativity – formatting, aesthetic, and design.
• Submission of the assignment to your teacher’s email by Friday of the week assigned.

Based on the above items, your grade will be placed in the gradebook in lieu of your “participation” for the week.
