Assignment Topic: Create a New PE Game/Activity
Rationale: Throughout your years of school, you encounter a variety of different activities and games in physical education (PE) class. Oftentimes, you revisit a specific game/unit more than once, and there may be times when a specific game becomes uninteresting. Exploring different equipment, games, and rules of games combined with your creativity can help in the development of a brand new game or activity that we just might introduce in PE class one day.
Objectives: - Student will be able to utilize knowledge of physical education activities, games, and units to develop their own, original PE game.
- Student will be able to demonstrate creativity and originality when developing a new PE game/activity.
- Student will be able to show knowledge of a quality physical education activity by including all necessary information in their assignment (materials, boundaries, rules, strategy, etc.).
Standards:
- 2.2.12.MSC.1: Explain and demonstrate ways to apply movement skills from one game, sport, aerobics, or recreational activity to another including striking skills (e.g., tennis, badminton, ping pong, racquetball, pickle ball).
- 2.2.12.MSC.3: Design, lead and critique rhythmic and physical activity that includes variations in time, space, force, flow, and relationships (e.g., creative, cultural, social, aerobics dance, fitness).
- 2.2.12.MSC.5: Develop rule changes to existing games, sports, and activities that enhance participation, safety, and enjoyment.
Directions: In this assignment, you will be using your knowledge and experience of physical education class to develop an ORIGINAL PE activity, game, or unit. The goal of this assignment is to use your creativity to come up with a game or activity that you can set up, explain to your classmates and play during PE class. Things to consider - the activity/game/unit:
- Should involve as much of the class as possible at one time.
- Needs to be inclusive. (People of different abilities should be able to participate.)
- Should be original. (You can use elements of other games, so long as you put your own twist on it.)
- Needs to be safe and fun!
In a cohesive document, include the following items for your game:
- Name of the game
- Overview of the game
- Include the type of game (invasion, chasing/fleeing, striking, etc.), objective of the game, how players/teams are organized, time limit of the game, and where the game is played.
- Equipment needed to play the game (be realistic - has to be with equipment we already use in PE)
- Rules of the game
- Include any rule variations here as well (think: how do we modify this game to make it easier/more challenging/to increase participation/to keep it going/etc.)
- Roles/positions of players
- Scoring
- How do teams score points?
- Strategy
- How do players/teams be successful?
- Safety
- Consider safety precautions players will want to take
- Diagram of playing area
Grading: Your assignment will be evaluated on the following:
- Completion of all assignment requirements.
- Use of accurate and up-to-date information.
- Creativity – formatting, aesthetic, and design.
- Submission of the assignment to your teacher’s email by Friday of the week assigned.
Based on the above items, your grade will be placed in the gradebook in lieu of your “participation” for the week.
